Storbrann i London

Fire spreads through Peckham social housing block. A major fire broke out in a Peckham housing block during the early hours of Thursday morning (November 26th).

Southwark Council confirmed that more than 125 fire fighters attended the scene of the blaze, which is believed to have started in a nearby building site.

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated after wind spread the fire to two residential blocks, Carisbrooke Gardens on the Willowbrook Estate and Oak Court on the North Peckham estate. According to a BBC report the fire started on a building site where a five-storey timber frame block of flats was being built.

No fatalities or serious injuries were reported although four people were taken to King's College Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The council has now set up a rest area at the Elephant and Castle leisure centre for people who have had to leave their homes.

Two years ago, a Fire Protection Agency report into a blaze at a timber-framed housing development in north London questioned if timber construction should be used for high-rise buildings.

The six-storey building was said to have burned to the ground in less than minutes.
